In 2023, 13.5% of U.S. households experienced food insecurity. The problem is even greater for families with children — 17.9% of households with kids faced hunger that year. In total, nearly 14 million children lived in food-insecure homes.

An estimated 2 in 5 U.S. children experience clothing insecurity, meaning they lack adequate clothes for school and daily life. Because SNAP and WIC benefits do not cover clothing, low-income families often cannot meet this basic need. In some communities, the absence of proper clothing is cited as a top reason for school absences.
